Small RugsSome small rugs are labeled "Machine Washable". Shake the rug outside and the place in washing machine at recommended temperature. Most labels require a warm temperature of about 90-105 degrees and a mild detergent. Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting if labeling permits.
Large RugsDrape rug over a clothes line, stairway banner or deck railing outside and beat it with a broom. Replace the rug inside and vacuum. If the rug may be dry cleaned, roll the rug and call ahead to ensure the establishment will accept rugs.
Fringed RugsVacuum from the center of the rug with gentle suction, and work the vacuum head outward toward fringe. Do not catch the fringe in the beater bar. Move rug to vacuum underneath the fringe.
Imported RugsRefer to the manufacturer's specifications. Most Oriental, Persian or Turkish rugs require a professional cleaning service, especially heirloom-style rugs. Be mindful of fringe and use the precautions in the Fringed Rugs section.
